Sudden power outages can be frustrating and sometimes a little scary. To ease your mind and keep everyone safe during an outage it’s best to be prepared and have a plan in place.
One of the most helpful tips is to build a kit. There are some essential things you should have in an easy to find location. It’s no fun digging for your flashlight in the dark. Here are some useful items to include:
- Flashlight – check periodically to make sure the batteries are fresh
- Backup package of batteries
- Blankets or sleeping bags (Fall & Winter)
- Matches
- Battery Powered Radio
- Portable Power Station (if desired), proper charging cables for cell phones
- If you have children it’s helpful to include something they can play with.
Other important information regarding outages:
- If you need power for medical reasons it’s important to have a plan in case of an outage. Be prepared to go someplace that has power or to the hospital.
- Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed. The contents should be good for at least 24 hours.
- Unplug electronics and small appliances and turn off light switches.
- If you use a generator, be sure to familiarize yourself with how to operate it safely.
Be prepared – keep your kit in an easy to find location.
