Tips to help you prepare and stay safe during a power outage:
- Keep flashlights in areas that are easy to find and check batteries periodically to make sure they are in working condition.
- Charge cells phones if you know stormy weather is on the way.
- Limit cell phone use during an outage to preserve the battery. Consider having one phone in the house that doesn’t require power.
- During cold weather, keep blankets in an area where they are easy to find. Keep doors and windows closed to keep the heat in.
- During warm weather, close curtains & blinds and keep doors and windows closed. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
- If you need power for medical reasons, have a backup plan in place for emergencies.
- Avoid opening your refrigerator or freezer during an outage. Contents should be good for at least 24 hours if doors are kept closed.
- Never get close to a downed power line. There is no way to tell if a line is energized or not. Back away and call 911. Urge others to stay away also.
- If you use a generator, make sure to follow safety guidelines.
